In 1994, Newfoundland pony stallions were so few in number that a search was launched to comb the Island in the hope of turning up breeding stock. Eight stallions were found. Deerfield Farm's stallions are first generation descendants of three of these "found" bloodlines: Rusty of the Black River; Skipper of Avalon; and Prince Tamarack.

Of the 300 or so ponies that remain, many are geldings and aged mares. The number of ponies able to carry on the breed is still relatively small. The Newfoundland Government has recognized the pony as a Heritage Animal and ponies can only leave the Island with the issuance of a government permit assuring that they are going to reputable breeders. Newfoundland Pony Society acts as official registrar for the breed.
The Newfoundland Pony Society was founded in 1979 and was incorporated in 1981 as a Registered Charity (#899 123 053 RRO 001). The Society convinced the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador that the Newfoundland Pony was a living part of the province’s cultural history and as such, required legal protection before there were too few ponies to maintain a healthy population. This initiative resulted in the Heritage Animals Act being passed on December 19, 1996. The Newfoundland Pony and the Newfoundland Pony Society received their official designation under this Act September 15, 1997.
The Society’s Objects and Duties under the Act are as follows:
Circa 1993:-The Newfoundland Pony was about to become extinct when a handful of local Newfoundlanders stepped into the breach and formed the Newfoundland Pony Society. They mounted a campaign to save the breed for future generations to enjoy. This is their story as told in this historic video. The Barnes Family of Manuals are the people that set up a small backyard breeding operation in those early days called Vinland Farm. Some of their ponies were Vinland's Rusty, Vinland's Beauty and Vinland's Star of the Sea. All of these animals appear in the movie especially Rusty and Beauty. She is the mare that wouldn't nurse her little foal. Watch and enjoy this wonderful story.
